What Makes a Reaction Paper Different

Students across Dubai's universities and colleges, whether following a British, American, or Indian curriculum, are regularly asked to write reaction papers on a novel, a documentary, a play, or a piece of art. A reaction paper is not quite the same as a formal review. It still needs to assess the quality of the work, but it also asks you to bring in your own voice through phrases like 'I believe' or 'I felt that'. In a city with such a mix of nationalities and academic backgrounds in every classroom, tutors often value reaction papers precisely because they show how differently each student experiences the same material.

Read or Watch the Material Properly First

Before writing a single line, give the source material your full attention. If you are working from a physical book, many students in Dubai prefer to read in an air-conditioned library or a quiet corner of a mall café once the midday heat makes outdoor study impossible. Going through the material a second time is genuinely useful here. On the first pass you absorb the plot or argument; on the second, you can pause and notice your own reactions, whether that is discomfort, excitement, confusion, or agreement.

If you are reviewing a film or a recorded lecture, watch it somewhere you will not be interrupted. Take Notes as You Go

Recording your thoughts while they are still fresh is the step most students skip, and it is the one that saves the most time later. Keep a notes app open on your phone or a small notebook beside you, since juggling lectures, commuting across the city, and part-time commitments leaves little room to rely on memory alone. Once you have a page or two of raw impressions, look for a pattern. That pattern becomes your thesis, the single idea that will hold the whole paper together and give it a personal angle rather than a plain summary.

Build an Outline, Then Write the Paper

With a thesis in hand, sketch a short outline before you start drafting. Your opening line should name the work you are reacting to and, where required, your own name. The first paragraph should introduce the piece and give an early sense of how you responded to it, since reaction papers are meant to carry your opinion openly rather than hide behind neutral academic language.

Edit With Fresh Eyes and Fresh Ears

Once the draft is finished, read it out loud. This catches awkward sentences, repeated words, and clumsy phrasing far more reliably than reading silently on a screen. If your usual study space is noisy, a short walk to a quieter room, a building common area, or even a parked car with the engine and air conditioning running can give you the calm needed for a proper read-through.

It also helps to revisit the source material one more time after finishing your draft. Rereading a chapter or replaying a key scene often surfaces a detail you missed the first time, and that fresh insight can sharpen your conclusion. Writing improves with repetition, and Dubai's bookstores remain a good place to keep exploring different genres and authors between assignments, feeding the habit of reading closely long after the current paper is submitted.
