There is no such thing as a legal freelance appliance technician in Dubai. Every technician who comes to your door, whether in Al Quoz, Deira, Karama, or a villa in Jumeirah, is supposed to be operating under a company holding a DED (Dubai Economy and Tourism) trade licence for general maintenance or technical services. This matters for one practical reason: liability. If a technician floods your kitchen, cracks a tile lifting the machine, or damages the drum trying to force a part that doesn't fit, it's the company that's liable, not the individual — but only if that company is properly licensed and, ideally, insured. A technician who turns up in a personal car with no company signage, no invoice book, and no fixed business address is a liability risk you're carrying yourself. Ask for the trade licence number or company name before booking, not after something goes wrong. Most legitimate outfits give it without hesitation because they list it on their invoices anyway.
Free-zone registered companies are a separate wrinkle. A business licensed in, say, Dubai South or DMCC free zone is not automatically permitted to trade or send staff into mainland Dubai residential buildings for paid work — that generally requires a mainland licence or a local service agent arrangement. In practice this rarely gets checked at the doorstep, but it's part of why some free-zone-based "handyman" outfits operate in a legal grey area. A mainland DED licence is the cleaner signal of a properly set-up trade business.
A reasonable timeline: you call or message between 8am and 6pm, most companies can offer same-day or next-day for Deira, Bur Dubai, Karama, Business Bay, and JLT, since technicians are usually based out of Al Quoz workshops and move outward from there through the day. On arrival, expect 15 to 20 minutes of diagnosis before any price is confirmed. A technician who quotes a fixed repair price over the phone without seeing the machine is guessing, and that guess is priced to protect them, not you — it'll usually be on the high side to cover the unknown. If the fault is a common one (won't drain, won't spin, leaking from the door, error code on the display), diagnosis is quick and the part is often carried in the van; the job is done within the hour. If it's a control board or motor issue requiring a part to be sourced, expect the technician to leave and return, typically within 24 to 48 hours, sometimes longer if the part isn't held locally and needs ordering — this is more common with less mainstream brands or older discontinued models.
In an apartment building in Marina, Business Bay, or JLT, building management sometimes requires a security pass or advance notice for contractors using the service lift — check this before booking a same-day slot, since a technician turned away at the loading bay is a wasted trip and sometimes a re-booking fee. In a villa in Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim, or the outer communities, access is simpler but you'll want the washing machine's location (laundry room versus kitchen utility) noted when you book, since some older villas have machines plumbed into awkward corners that add genuine time to the job.
A machine under five years old with a single component failure — pump, belt, door seal, even a control board — is almost always worth repairing. Past seven or eight years, especially with drum bearing failure or a second major fault within twelve months of the first, you're often better off replacing the unit.
