Vitamins, as most of us know, contain extremely important nutrients that are necessary for us to live healthy lives. Many of us take a multivitamin tablet every morning and try to be careful that our diet contains healthy foods.

Another important hormone for muscle retention and development, testosterone, also begins to drop as we age. Also, because most of us suffer from pain and mobility issues, it is harder to exercise and muscles begin to waste away. When muscle tissue is lost, our bodies don't need as many calories, so weight gain becomes a problem.

Bones and fat don't contribute very much to keeping our rate of metabolism high, while muscle continues to burn calories even when we are resting. So, if a person has an average frame and has been somewhat active until they reach the age of 50, they will require 2,000 calories/day to maintain a healthy weight.

By our mid-fifties, most men will only need 1,800 calories/day and women will be down to only 1,750 calories/day. The result of all this is that a diet that worked well for us in our 20s and 30s and maybe in our 40s, will cause us to start gaining weight in our 50s.

For many of us, the only choice will be to reduce how much we eat. It follows that our vitamin intake will be threatened because the amount of micronutrients we get in our diet depends on how much food we are eating. For example, orange juice can give us 100% of our recommended vitamin C intake by drinking four ounces, but you can also get the same amount f vitamin C by eating a large amount of other food, like french fries, that have a lot more calories. When we were younger, we might have been able to get away with eating a lot of high-calorie, low-vitamin foods but we just cannot do this as we age. If we ate enough of any food when we were young, we probably got enough vitamins to get a serious lack of vital vitamins.

Of course, there are always exceptions. You can continue to eat a lot as you get older but you will need to burn more calories to make up the difference. If you add more activity as you age, you will be able to eat more and keep the body will keep more of its muscle mass and that burns more calories.
