Things Not to Think About If You Want to Sleep at Night
There are many topics it is best not to think about when you hit the hay. This blog describes them so you know what to avoid. Fearsome things to steer clear of like bedbugs and man-eating sharks, the meaning of life, and what's wrong with you are mentioned.
Does a film document topics that make your heart race play in your head when you tum in at night? Letting it run without taking control means you're on track for insomnia. If you want to sleep, stop bedtime mind movies like these.
Things you wish you hadn't done. There are plenty of things you wish you hadn't done. You wish you hadn't had that embarrassing moment in front of those people you hoped to impress. You wish you hadn't waited to do that task that needed immediate attention. You're sorry you were quiet when you could have made a funny quip to lighten that difficult moment. Think about those things when your head touches the pillow and you're likely to stay awake all night.
You might be scared to attend an interview, speak in public, or drive a stick shift in traffic because you haven't done it before now. If you remember you're scared of something you have to face soon, but need shut-eye, you're out of luck. Thinking about fearsome upcoming events will put you in fight-or-flight mode.
The meaning of life :
"Why are humans on the planet?"
"Were people invented and if so why?"
"Is there a purpose to life?"
"What are you supposed to do and are you doing it yet?"
Contemplate the meaning of life and you could blow your mind rather than go to sleep.
The size of the universe and beyond. Watching a mind movie showing the darkness of space and a few beautiful planets might be a good way to wind down and prepare to sleep. If your thoughts expand, though, you may wonder how big the universe is and what lies further afield. You might try to picture infinity, but not be able to achieve such a feat. The confusion and stress of studying what you can't possibly know will leave you wide awake.
Things that are wrong with you. You may think there's nothing much wrong with you when you go about your business in the day. When you go to bed, faults. Maybe you imagine your nose is too big, you talk too much, or you have a niggling physical complaint that might turn into a serious condition and kill you. It's best to shift your attention off the topic of what's wrong without.
The state of the planet and its inhabitants. There are plenty of worrying planet-related events to mull over. Consider them at bedtime and you'll be so tense you can't sleep. Thinking about whales swallowing plastic bags, children starving, and the state of politics will not help you slip into sweet dreams.
Man-eating sharks. Even if you know the facts-sharks only kill about 6 people a year compared to snakes who bump off around 50,000 via bites-you might think about being stuck in the ocean with a great white when you snuggle down in your blanket. As the shark's beady eyes and razor-sharp teeth come into focus, you'll know you aren't going to visit the land of Nod anytime soon.
